How to clean my closet
How I did it: I've been getting rid of things for years now, lots of donations to thrift stores, and things that are just not thrift store worthy I leave out on corners of streets for passers-by. It makes it easier for me to move and travel, which are big goals in my life. It also creates space for new things to come to me.
Lessons & tips: One magazine recommended turning the hanger around when you wore a thing, so you could see which things you weren't wearing.
Usually I get rid of a thing before I find its replacement.
I like to make piles of things so I can see the actual mass of belongings, it's inspiring. Also moving is a huge help.
Come back later, again and again. When you start feeling sentimental, come back later. Box things up and see which ones you pull out again, which things you don't need after all.
Resources: Thrift stores - some pick up, some accept clothing that is only suitable for 'rags' - ASK.
Craigslist, Freecycle.
