How I did it: Bought the book and read it. Looked around at sites like 43folders. Bought Omnifocus for my mac.
Lessons & tips: GTD has some valuable ideas, but it does tend to lend itself to fiddling with your productivity system instead of actually doing work. I think it is useful as a starting point because some of the core concepts like Inbox Zero are definitely valuable, but you need to adapt it to your own circumstances
