How to build my own website
How I did it: I got the website several years ago, and it took me a long time to actually get it to a design standpoint that suited me - that's why I say it took me two years. I have finally reached the point where the look and feel of it is perfect for me.
Lessons & tips: No clashing colours, no flashing graphics, no pointless unrelated content that only you will find funny. No moving backgrounds, no harsh fonts, and don't use shitty-looking graphics for banners and such - the kind that look awful and have artifacts all over them. Test all your buttons and links regularly to make sure it all works smoothly, and keep backups of all your files. If you're slow to produce content or don't have time to put it all up on a regular basis - or if you just want a little more stuff on there - maybe find a close friend who can contribute as well. Spice it up. And NO BACKGROUND MUSIC. I close pages immediately that have annoying music playing in the background. It's not your MySpace, it's a website, and if you want people to look at it and read it, make it comfortable for them to do so.
