"It's a responsibility all women have to each other!"
How I did it: I went to their Website and clicked on the link for volunteers, filled out the application and sent it in. A few days later I got a call for an interview, background check and orientation. Everyone was super nice!
Lessons & tips: Planned Parenthood helps women in so many ways!! When most people hear the name they think 'abortion', but the organization also provides information on adoption, woman's health, give referrals to other clinics that can provide other types of care, they do yearly pelvic exams, have low-to-no cost birth control, they serve low-income women that otherwise wouldn't have access to this kind of care. I don't want to go on too much of a rant, but for years men had control over woman's health, their reproduction and often times brushed off their concerns as "all in their heads" when really woman had legitimate issues or problems. Planned Parenthood helps give women control over their bodies-it's a comforting environment, you feel supported, it's not a 'girls-only' club (I have guy friends who go in for exams, test, etc, too), but it makes a first time visit easy when you walk in a see women helping women on what can be a sensitive subject. I remember my first visit-I was 19, nervous, needed birth control, had never had a pap, didn't even know what they were looking for... Now I'm in nursing school and would love to get my Masters in Nursing one day and work as an NP at a PPH!
