How to join a book club by MamaKitty

"Stepping out of my comfort zone to read a different kind of book than I am accustomed to reading and meeting new people was really fun."

How I did it: At a holiday party I was listening to a fellow partier talk about the book club she attends.  This was intriguing to me.  So I googled "Book Clubs St. Louis".  One of the first selections was through Meetup.com.    Because it wasn't associated with a group having a specific interest, I thought that it would open up more possibilities for me.  I was fortunate that the meeting was two weeks away, enabling me enough time to read the book, and that it was on a day I didn't have to work.  So I took it as a touch of kismet and joined. 

Lessons & tips: Even if there is no book club in your immediate area, I think if you connect with meetup.com, it is not hard to start one.  Hmmm... talk about stepping outside your comfort zone.

Resources: Google and I think craigslist would be a good resource.

This is great that you found a Book Club in this way! i agree that Craigslist would also be a great place to explore when looking for a book club.

I have only been

able to attend one meeting. It was so much fun. There were all kinds of people, with different views. Even the months i am not able to attend, I still read the selected book. I don’t personally tend to read much fiction, so it is fun to read what others suggest. Then it is even more fun to go to a bookstore or coffee house to discuss the book.

Right now I am reading The Unbearable Lightness of Being, and I am enjoying it very much. The next book club meeting is scheduled for a Sunday on which I am scheduled to work. I am looking around for someone to switch days with me.

Even though I

was not able to attend the book club meeting, I did read the book. It was very interesting. I particularly enjoyed reading something that would not even enter my awareness if it weren’t for the book club. There does seem to be a tendency fro the selection to have a corresponding movie. With Kandera, I wonder how the interesting 3rd party rambles are integrated into the movie. I know at one time, the book Laughable Loves was considered for the monthly selection.
