How I did it: i own a weimaraner who needs a ton of exercise.  i ended up buying a bike and finding a near-by place to take him.  i would bike and he would just run like crazy.  he loved it!

Lessons & tips: make it a habit for both you and your dog.  once finn (my pup) became used to the daily runs, he would should signs of frustration if we missed a day.  this kept me motivated to take him on our runs daily.  wasn't so helpful when we missed for actual bad days, like thunderstorms and such.  :)
