How to apply to universities
How I did it: Researched the best universities for architecture through listings/ rankings. Developed a spreadsheet outlining criteria such as ranking, courses offered, fees, cost of living, duration, location, scholarships, etc. Narrowed down 10 and then 8 universities worldwide. Made a list of application requirements for each university and deadlines. Asked for recommendations about 4 months ahead of time. Most of the universities have online applications, which were easier to send. Wrote SOP a month in advance. Made a portfolio, which is a requirement for design courses. Wrote TOEFL a year ago. Wrote IELTS a month in advance. Wrote GRE at the very last minute (bad decision), after application.
Lessons & tips: Write GRE first, and then IELTS and TOEFL a year in advance. Then research your universities. If a portfolio is needed, select your best work at least 6 months in advance. Write SOP 3 months in advance and relook it over because it may not seem as good later on. Ask all recommenders 4 months in advance; get one or two extras. Once SOP is done you can apply online immediately. The earlier the better.
