How I did it: We didn't do it.  We believe that God is the author of life.  HE gave us this child (and our first child) in HIS timing!  We stopped actively trying.  We made the RE appointment, but ended up finding out we had conceived before the appointment happened!

Lessons & tips: No advice.  It is hard and awful and grueling to try for many months with no baby.  If you are going through infertility, I understand how hard it is and I feel for you.  Get a prayer life.  It may not fix the problem, but it can help you get through!  God bless your baby-making endeavors!
