How to research my family tree
How I did it: I invested lots of my time but it was great fun, and still is. I researched all my surnames and got in touch with all branches of surnames (not just male line, but it is fine to stick to male line, too).
600+ individuals.
It was great experience since I reunited several branches together after many years. I got in touch with some very close relatives, and now I have several great pen pals. I have now several relatives I'm so proud of (and that was not the case before).
I have learned lots abut myself and my roots. I feel empowered.
I also started family tree for my SO.
Lessons & tips:
- choose a program
- write down eveything you know
- google on each individual and surname, discover info on surname history, browse phonebook, vital & cemetary databases etc. - this stage alone can last for months
- collect data from living relatives, even distant ones; one relative per branch is usually enough
- Status Animarum
- visit parishes, graveyards etc.
