How to learn to knit
How I did it: when I was 10 yrs old, my family spent 3 months in Syracuse NY. (My dad worked for IBM) A girl met there taught me to do one thing.... the knit stitch. Never learned how to cast on, purl, or cast off. I can only imagine how long that scarf would be now (reminds me of a scene from 'like water for chocolate')
Flash forward 12 years, and my scarf and my NY friend are all but blurry memories. A friend at work taught me to crochet. Crochet was cool, cause if you made a mistake, all you have to do is yank, and it all comes undone. I decided than that crochet ruled and knitting drooled. I never figured out how to fix my mistakes in knitting....
Flash forward another 20 years, and after oohing and aweing over knitted lace, I decided to give knitting another try. I bought a book, some needles, and was off to make yet another world's longest scarf. Knit, purl, cast on, cast off... the needles clicking softly and rhymically... i was in heaven! It wasn't long after that before I was mastering increases, decreases, cable cast ons, drop stitches, SSK, P2tog, K2tog tbl, SKP, reading charts, learning this foreign language that was knitting.
Do it. You won't regret it.
