How to learn a foriegn language

"I learnt Mandarin but i never use it. So, slowly, i have lost all my vocabulary. Also the language is pretty difficult to learn, with no genralised grammar rules, etc. So it didn't give me the satisfaction i was looking for"
How I did it: I took up the language while pursuing my Masters. I could have joined a language school otherwise. My teacher was very good and he taught us the basic conversation. But thereafter, i lost all touch with chinese as i never interacted with the chinese, and stoved my books in the attic
Lessons & tips: Have a clear objective why you want to learn the language. Get a community you can practise it and keep using it after you have learnt.
