How to get our estate plan done
How I did it: We identified a lawyer through my wife's investment advisor, and she turned out to be great. Networking for this sort of thing is the best way to go. We went in knowing roughly what we needed to accomplish, but not understanding the legal specifics or the implications of some choices, but ready to ask questions. The lawyer was EXTREMELY willing to work with us to complete all of the trust and power of attorney documents, including reviews, revisions, signatures, and filing, within a very tight window.
Lessons & tips: The first thing is that you have to accept not only your own mortality, but also the possibility of incapacitation such that you can't make decisions for yourself. This gets into tough questions that aren't fun for you to look at today, but will be less fun and more challenging for your family to deal with down the road if you haven't answered them.
