How to work with kids
How I did it: Years ago, I started off volunteering to see if I really had what it took to work with children. My performance, dedication, and creativity landed me a job. From there, I've worked my way through to Chief Operating Officer. I ALWAYS suggest people try volunteering to explore and enter a new field.
Lessons & tips: Working with children responsibly requires that you continuously consider how every action will affect your young admirers. One area that I feel has been a continuous source of pain is that of favoritism. Many of my employees find it very easy to warm up to most of the young ones but there is inevitably the one child with the odd behaviors, running nose, dirty clothes that you find yourself unable to warm up to. I always advise my workers, if you cannot hug ALL the children, then don't hug any of them. It is human nature to find it difficult to deal with certain types but this becomes painfully obvious to the one child who is not embraced equally. The only way to keep all things even keeled is to treat everyone equally, even if that means bringing everything back a peg or two for everyone.
