How I did it: I sort of had the reiki ability naturally... The thing was that I wasn't confident in it, or what it was, and felt like I needed to take my first level to reaffirm myself. In essence, I just needed to learn hand positions. It took a one day course for me to get my level one, and I plan to take my level two within the next couple months!

Lessons & tips: If you're unsure about taking the course, don't force yourself. When you're ready, you'll be more than willing to learn more. :)
