How I did it: I wrote my first draft of my novel in a month for NaNoWriMo.  That was the easy part.  Now comes the hard part...editing the damn thing and making it perfect.  THAT will take much, much longer than 1 month! 

I wrote every single day, did minor edits, and just blew through it.
