How I did it: First off, I'm not that good at it and I realize that learning guitar is an ongoing process that will never really be 100% accomplished.... but I just decided one day that I needed to put my mind to this and I went for it. I wanted to be able to play P&W songs at church. I taught myself from an old Carole King guitar book & an old Beatles book from the 70s. They had chord diagrams in them and the Carole King book had an intro on strumming patterns. After that it was just hours and hours of playing "All You Need Is Love" and "You've Got a Friend" until my fingers calloused and looked nasty. Now, after 2 years, I can play oodles of songs and write my own! Yippee!
Learning Beatles songs helped me when I was learning guitar too! It’s kinda like as I learned Beatles songs, I was also subconsicously learning about chords, and progressions and song structure. I Always tell people who are begining guitar to start learning Beatles songs :)
