How to learn to type properly
"Easy. And before I knew it, I had learned a new skill that would prove to be priceless."
How I did it: I joined aKeyboarding class. I probably wouldn't have had the discipline to practice everyday had I been on my own.
I have put down "3 months" for the time it took me. Most certainly this will not be the case for you, that you join a class or practice on your own.
The class I joined was part of my school activities. I had one class of Keyboarding a day that lasted a bit under an hour which meant that it was quite spread out.
Lessons & tips:
- Join a class. If you can't or don't want to, invest in a little Teaching To Type program and practice on your own.
- Practice when your surroundings are calm and quiet. Use earplugs to cut out a certain amount of distractions. Perhaps listen to music through head phones if you need a "background sound" to cut out the rest.
- Set yourself a time limit. You don't want to over do it and be utterly sick of the exercises on Day 1. You also don't want to be skipping ahead before you're really ready to.
- Persevere. Some days you will get the impression that you aren't doing as well as the previous days. That OK. I'd say it's even normal. So don't let it discourage you! :)
Resources:
- a program made specially for the purpose of teaching people how to type using two hands, all fingers and without looking at the keyboard.
