How I did it: it took me 9 months to figure out whether or not i was going to stay at home.  since i'm young and i haven't really made a living that would have made a big difference in the income, we decided that it would be worth it to live off one income than to work all the time and put our son in daycare.  i'm SO glad we made this choice because i cannot imagine not being here to see everything that my son has done since he was born.  completely, completely 100% worth it.

Lessons & tips: you can make up for all the sacrifices later.  nothing can compare to seeing your child everyday and being the one to take care of them.
