I envy you
It’s my DREAM, man!
How I did it: My best friend and I bought plane tickets (I got mine through the JTB website) and made hotel and ryokan reservations online. We bought a JR Rail Pass (unlimited train for a wk) so we could explore central Japan, which I highly recommend. We spent two weeks in Japan and it was one of the best experiences I've ever had.
Lessons & tips: Buy a pocket translation guide (about $7) and memorize some key phrases in Japanese. You can get by with English in bigger cities, particularly with young people. Make hotel reservations and buy tickets in advance. Find a place that rents bicycles in Kyoto and ride around.
Resources: Lots of saved spending money.

I lived in Japan once for a couple years, bu I was 9 at the time and was too young to remember, plus I didnt get the fool effect of Japan becuase my father was in the military, and I was caged on the military base! Hope you enjoyed it.
