How I did it: I am a certified financial counselor.  So, I volunteered to teach a money management class at a local homeless shelter for women.  We are doing a 6 week series.  I have already given 3 weeks of classes.  This class gives these women tools they can use to get on their feet again and manage their money correctly.

Lessons & tips: What skills do you have?  Take those skills, and see how that can help someone in need.  Then, volunteer those skills at a local shelter.  Also, decide what type of group you want to help.  Women with children, single women, men? 

Resources: Search google for local shelters in your area and visit/call the staff there to see if they can use your help/expertise in aiding the people there.
