How to move to Chicago by exr5168

"Best decision of my life (so far)."

How I did it: I found a job first, then did a lot of research online. I found an apartment on Craigslist.  I was lucky enough to know someone in Chicago who could recommend neighborhoods.  Once I made the decision, I just set the move date and worked to get all my ducks in line.

Lessons & tips: It's Ok to sell your car. Public transportation here is fantastic and I haven't regretted selling my car at all!

Did you do this on a whim?

Did you know people there or did you have to start fresh? That is my biggest worry, going to a huge city and not knowing a soul.

Sweet Home Chicago

Yes, I moved on a whim and didn’t know anyone. This is one of the friendliest cities I’ve ever been to. Other than work, there are so many ways to meet new people. I suggest getting involved in anything and you’ll have new friends. There are also a lot of social websites to connect you – I prefer Meetups.com and Metromix.com.

You only live once – why not take a chance! I love this city!!!

I’m likely going to move there but gotta find a job first. Seems to be impossible in my industry.

Ugh...

I was very lucky that I had connections in Chicago from my previous job…that and it was about a year and a half ago. The job market in Chicago is sucky right now. I think the last I saw the unemployment rate was up around 8.6%. Unless you’re wealthy, I’d sure try to get a job first. There is some temp work available…so you could always try that….
