How to take up yoga

Post spinal surgery and yoga is suggested

Did you have to stay with the one teacher?

Is there a YOGA title to identify myself as a brand new student, so I don’t re-injure myself?

Hello!

Generally before you take a Yoga class you fill out a form detailing any injuries etc. You can find a studio that offers weekly classes taught by the same instructor, sometimes there are substitutes, so it is up to you to let them know your circumstances. But I have found that talking to any instructor before class detailing any difficulties and previous injuries will help them help you. They can offer you modifications and special attention. I’ve never been to a Yoga class in a gym and have heard that sometimes those are not as attentive to special needs, but what you should be looking for is plenty of alternative exercises, attention to you and your practice and someone open to hearing you before you even start the class.

Call around and see if you can get an instructor on the line. Also go to classes labeled Beginners, Gentle or Introduction. These are tell tale signs that you will be getting someone who is looking for inexperienced and limited mobility.

Also www.yogajournal.com is a wonderful resource especially to learn names and full versions of poses, but they offer advice on injuries, modifications and also a great deal of other helpful literature.

Good luck!!

Edit* I forgot to add, talk to a physical or massage therapist he or she may be an excellent resource for finding a caring Yoga instructor for you!
