How I did it: This was a long journey, and I might not be the best to give advice. Motivation has been lacking in my case but hey I finally got there. Also, I don;t want to blame my supervisors but they sure didn't help. Procrastinating made it take longer than I wished. I learned about time management.

This is all exactly how I feel about it. If I finish, it will be in spite of my advisors, not because of them. They weren’t exactly a hinderence, but there was a severe lack of encouragement. Sometimes I feel like they only exist to tell me I forgot a semi-colon or something equally meaningless. In any case, I agree with you. Just write something, even if it sucks. Sometimes just the act gets you going.
This lack of assistance seems to be the norm – it is kind of like “you’re weak if you need assistance.” I’ve had my advisor hand my proposal back to me and say he wasn’t even going to correct it, it was “so bad.” Well, how am I supposed to know how to fix it if you don’t tell me what’s wrong??? Ironically, I’m an excellent writer in all other aspects of life. I also agree that most are more concerned with punctuation than quality of ideas. It’s like you’re trying to build a house and you’re struggling with the construction of a good, solid foundation, frame and structure and they are distracted by what color the walls should be. Let me get the frame built before you criticize the externals…
