How to volunteer for something
How I did it: I started volunteering for various things when I was around 14 years old. It started with church stuff (food drives, clothing drives, outreach things), but now I'm an active participant in my college's chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Every Saturday, I wake up early and travel to a job site with fellow students and work on houses that will someday be homes for families in the area. It is such an amazing feeling to leave a worksite and be able to actually see how much you accomplished.
Last year I was Volunteer of the Year. :)
Lessons & tips: - Become familiar with the volunteer organizations around you and find one that resonates with your values, outlook, etc.
- Bring a friend! Volunteering can be a fun time to share with friends, just don't go too crazy and forget WHY you're there in the first place. :)
- Every now and then, look at what you are doing and try to imagine the impact it will have. It's a wonderful thought.
