How I did it: I googled about 15 different carpool sites, and then added my name to all of them.  I waited for people to contact me back, and after about 6 weeks I finally found someone who fit with my schedule.  When I did this, nobody was really interested, gas was cheap, and the economy was going strong.  I suspect that more people would want to do this now - in fact, I even received several emails about van-pooling from sites that apparently got my name off the registry rolls from the sites I was a part of.   

Lessons & tips: Don't give up, message your school's listserv if there is one, and register for every site that you can.
