How to have a Compost Bin.
How I did it: Since last Thursday, rain has been pouring here in SoCal. I had a rain break two days ago and I didn’t waste time to dig up some worms in the backyard. I was so excited and so happy! Many weeds had sprung up because of all the rain. I pulled up some weeds and wahlah!... the worms were hanging on the roots. It was easier than digging up the soil with a shovel. I was doing two things at the same time. Got rid of some weeds and got some worms at the same time. It was a good day!
1) Added shredded paper at the bottom of the bin. It helps a lot if you have a paper shredder.
2) Added some compost soil.
3) Added some veggie and fruit scraps.
4) And finally, added the worms.
It started raining again and it will be raining for the next few days. My bin needs more worms so I’ll wait till the rain storm is over. Other than that, my worms are in heaven.
Lessons & tips:
- Buy a dark bin.
- Buy two lids - one for the bottom of the bin to collect the “worm tea” and the other to cover it.
- Drill holes at the bottom of the bin.
- Drill holes around the bin about an inch below the edge of the bin.
- Dig up some worms after a good rain. They're free!
