How I did it: My kid gave me a book that gave great instructions.  Then, just knit 2, purl 2...  I mastered double knit heels, which really make great boot socks, and the toes were a snap.

Lessons & tips: Socks should be wool.  It is easier to knit and nicer to wear.  But get the wool with a bit of nylon to help keep them up unless you're making kilt socks, which get held up with elastic at the knees.
