How to beat trichotillomania
How I did it: i'm seventeen years old and i've struggled with trich for nearly six years.
i know it's really different for everyone, but here's what helped me: (it might be worth a try for you!)
See a hairdresser who you like and trust. I used to HATE haircuts because the hairdressers would make comments about the damage i've done to my hair from pulling it out; I never wanted to take the time to explain my situation to them.
Finally I went to see someone and I took the time to tell him about the condition. Aside from a great haircut, this gave me a place to return to, and I didn't feel afraid to get a haircut anymore.
Writing down the number of days since pulling my hair out also helped.
After my haircuts, I was able to stop the pulling for a few weeks. It always came back though, so I decided that I needed a big change in my hair. I got a pixie cut and I haven't pulled out my hair in nearly 80 days, now. (Once again; this won't work for everyone, but if you're not afraid to take the plunge, then why not?)
this is the longest i have gone without pulling out my hair since before i even had trich.
Now that i've got the pixie cut...
Even though I really don't have much hair to pull out in the first place, I don't feel the urge anymore and my hair looks completely normal now. (Mind you, I had no bald spots before - just breakage and strange looking spots from the wear-and-tear of trich).
Also it's a huge confidence booster. =)
Lessons & tips: --if you're afraid of haircuts, see a hairdresser you trust.
--keep track of how long you can make it without pulling. (i write it on my hand)
--reward yourself for not pulling.
--let close friends and family know about your progress- they'll be proud of you and hopefully encourage you.
