How I did it: I waited until the Kindle 2 was announced, and I used my Amazon gift certificates from Christmas to pay for most of it. I also got the leather Kindle jacket to protect it, since I'm so clumsy I know I'll drop it at some point.

Lessons & tips: Let your friends and family know you really want one, and to get you gift certificates for the holidays/birthdays/anniversaries.
