How to plant a vegetable garden by colleenFL

"Square Foot Gardening works great!"

How I did it:  
I based my garden on the principles in Mel Barthlomew's book, Square Foot Gardening. It worked great. I built raised beds with some trellises for the vining crops and kept everything mulched to cut down on watering and weeding. I fenced in the garden to keep out feral cats. The garden produced plenty of veggies and didn't take much upkeep.

That would take me seven weeks rather than days with our backyard :)

I really like the idea of small, manageable plots. My folks have three narrow but long boxed garden beds that can be accessed from both sides making it easier to upkeep.

But our yards… the soil is pretty dry, the ground is rarely level, and we never catch up with the up-keep. Still, one day… I think I have to tame the yards first though!
