How I did it: Wrote a blog.  Told my husband I wasn't a Christian anymore.  Mentioned I was an atheist or a former Christian if religion ever came up.  Told my mom, brother, dad.

Lessons & tips: If you are involved in church, you should probably tell them as soon as possible after your decision is final.  Don't say "I'm an atheist" unless you are certain; in other words, if you aren't quite sure yet, don't say it yet.  Mostly, just wait until the topic comes up.  Be as explicit as is appropriate.  "I'm not a Christian anymore" or "I'm an atheist" or "I've been going to an atheist Meetup" or "I stopped going to church" all work fine.

Trust me, it will feel good to be honest and open.

If you are married to a theist, be very careful about how you tell him/her.  You may want to get a third party that you both trust to mediate the discussion.
