How to ride a horse
How I did it: My friend rode horses for a while and decided to take some of her friends riding with her and obviously I was one of them. We went and I was quite nervous, naturally, but as soon as I got on I was so happy and I knew this was what I wanted to do forever.
Lessons & tips:
- If you're nervous, maybe go with a friend who has ridden before to support you.
- Take a lesson at a good riding school who have whatever qualifications that are needed.
- Don't think you're going to be doing too much at first, or think you'll be able to do anything. It takes time so be careful.
- I'd advise you to wear a helmet although I know some people choose not to.
- Don't do anything you think you can't do, or you're scared of doing (it'll just make things worse.)
- Relax and have fun!
Resources: Reading lots of horse books has helped me a lot and riding with friends has improved my relaxation whilst riding and also helped my confidence.
Also, going to lots of shows and hunter trials is good as you can get used to being around lots of horses and can watch some really good riders; maybe pick up some tips.
