"Daunting, but empowering"

How I did it: By own my own house, I guess I mean, have my own mortgage. After husband of 15 years left, it's been a struggle to get his name off the house, even though I've been paying the mortgage on my own for over a year. Well it happened this week. It helped that we were both as civil as possible and we both wanted the same thing. It did feel good, but also made me feel a bit weird. When my lawyer said, well you've got your own home now - I replied, yes and 30 years worth of debt thank you very much. So I guess really the bank owns my home, but it's still MY home and no one else's.

Lessons & tips: Don't get nasty about things, have a good lawyer, financial advisor and don't take on debt that you can't afford.

I was with my partner for 15 years and the relationship broke down. We still had to live under the same roof for 6 months until the sale was completed which was quite difficult.

We have remained amicable but he bought a house straight away and I went 100’s of miles away until I was ready to start again. Unfortunatley, my funds from the house dwindled away and I’ve been left renting and debts from the house. I’m going to try and turn this around. I am with a new partner and when the economy improves I hope we will be in a better position to buy our own home.
