"Sewing is the life skill for which I am most grateful. Glad I persevered in learning how to sew as a youngster so I could enjoy it my whole life. Sorry I couldn't say that in one sentence."
How I did it: My mom got me started on a machine when I was in elementary school. I was self-motivated and just started reading pattern directions and sewing up a storm. I also had a couple sewing books to refer to when I wanted to learn a new technique. I was making my own school clothes by the time I was in Jr. High. I had no fear, thus would try anything.
Lessons & tips: Get in the habit of quality work. Avoid shortcuts (except a few worthy ones) and be in the practice of "unsewing" (ripping out bad stitching) and restitching when necessary. It is well worth investing the time and effort to produce a good result. Use quality thread and change your needle after each garment you make (or after 6 - 10 hrs of sewing). Join a sewing class or club... it's fun to learn with other people. Enjoy!
