How to touch someone's life
How I did it: I recently had a friend of mine come out to several friends and family members. Though I heard about this coming out from a friend before I heard it from her, I was preparing myself for the inevitable; what to say when she told me. I didn't know whether to take the shocked stance or the proud stance. Honestly, if she was happy, I was okay with it. The phone call finally came. I told her I was shocked, and it would take a while for me to get back to my normal self, but that I was proud of her for being herself in a time where people with a different sexual orientation were looked at different than those who were straight. I also told her I was happy if she was. She told me that she was grateful to have a friend like me and I was profoundly touched.
Lessons & tips: This isn't one of those things you can set out on and it's guaranteed that you'll accomplish it today. Some medium of getting this done can be:
- being there for family and friends
- offer advice in times of need
- be there for anyone in general
Resources: Telling someone how you really feel.
