How to go to New York and get an illustration job in Nov. 2008
"went to new York and met with 3 children's publishers. "
How I did it: I didn't get a job, but I made some important contacts and got some very specific advice. Now I have a new goal to work toward.
I researched publishers in CWAIM (mentioned below). I also went to stores and looked at the kinds of books that specific publishers are printing. Look for good matches. Don't expect the big companies to actually meet with you. Prepare yourself for rejection. It's ok. You'll get some really good advice and encouragement from the smaller publishers. They'll actually sit down with you and talk about your portfolio.
Lessons & tips: Go with someone you trust. Use the subways. Plan for food to cost more than you thought.
Resources: Children's writers and Illustrator's Market
