How to volunteer at an animal shelter
How I did it: Two weeks ago I went to a nearby animal shelter, had a look around and picked up a volunteer form. I filled them out and brought them back to the shelter earlier today, and they let me get stuck right into work. I've more experience with cats than dogs, so they put me in the cat pens and I got right into work.
The shelter environment is great, all the animals are friendly, as are the staff, and everyone's really relaxed. I ended up having a lot of free time which I spent cuddling the 4-week-old kittens and little puppies, which I didn't expect... I thought I'd be cleaning up animal crap all day!
It's really rewarding work for animal lovers, feeling like you're giving something back, and well worth it. For anyone in the Moreton Bay Council region in QLD Australia, check out http://www.peninsulaanimalaid.com.au/
Lessons & tips: It helps to have a poor sense of smell... and a strong will, because you're going to want to adopt every animal in sight!
Resources: Google - search for an animal shelter near you :).
