How to compete in a grappling tournament
How I did it: After one year of training, I've finally competed in a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament!
The result was I lost three matches by points, lost one match by submission (clock choke), and won one match by points.
Winning more would've been nice, but I was happy at avoiding submission in three of the matches.
Points play a much bigger part than I thought, and normally I am fine with letting the opponent try to attack me and even giving them advantage because I like to let people tire out. However, it matters a lot more in a tournament.
What I learned is that I am great at escapes, but I have to transition from escapes into more offensive positions, which I will be working on.
Lessons & tips: I'll share something someone shared with me today: "When offensive, link three moves together. When defensive, link five moves together."
Resources: Lots of mat time.
