How to visit New Orleans
"After planning for the trip with my band, practicing my heart out, and taking a 10-hour bus ride, I finally got to go to New Orleans, and it was definitely worth it to be in the Sugar Bowl."
How I did it: My band went to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl in January 2009. This was a great experience that I will never forget.
Greatest things about the trip:
- The 10-hour bus ride was more fun with a bunch of friends from the band and the color guard.
- The Marriott downtown was pretty nice.
- We were within walking distance of everything downtown, especially the River-walk.
- Everywhere I went, I saw other band members exploring the area; going with a large group is very fun.
- At the Sugar Bowl rehearsals, I met marching band members from all over the country.
Lessons & tips:
- If you plan on going to New Orleans for any occasion, I recommend going with other people.
- It's nice to go near a special occasion so you can see the great history of New Orleans and be a part of its traditions.
- Be crazy! New Orleans is not meant to be taken lightly; it's built to withstand the wildest party that Mardi Gras-goers can come up with, even when it's not Mardi Gras.
- Take plenty of pictures. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a picture in Nawlins is worth at least a million.
- Try Cajun food, even if you hate it.
- Check out the Riverwalk, especially for souvenir t-shirts and food galore.
- Stop for a minute and listen to a band play on the street or a magician amaze you in Jackson Square.
