How to learn to develop B&W film
"In tenebris, vici."
How I did it: Reels and tank off craigslist, Diafine and Silvergrain from Freestyle, used a closet as a darkroom, and went for it. Do I really need to expand it to 150 characters? (yes)
Lessons & tips: Use Diafine! No timer, no crazy stop bath. Very forgiving. And reusable! All hail the mighty soup.
1. Practice loading your own reels while looking at what you're doing. Rehearse what you're going to do. When you mess up loading the reels, notice how it feels to your fingers, so you can troubleshoot mis-loads later.
2. Practice with your eyes closed. When you mess up, try to figure out what went wrong and fix it without looking.
3. Go for it. If you mess up and cannot get the reel started, shove the film inside the tank and try later.
