Wow! I’ve never even heard of such a thing, but this definitely sounds interesting! There are so many things to experience . . .
and your day sounded soo relaxing . . .
How to float in a sensory deprivation tank
How I did it: My boyfriend does this regularly and has been raving about it. I finally decided to try it.
I spent quite a long time not relaxing entirely but instead paying attention to the experience of it. I experimented with different ways to support my head to get my neck to feel fully relaxed. It seemed I could relax my neck with my hands supporting my head, but then my shoulders wouldn't be relaxed. I also played around a bit trying to stop bouncing back and forth and just noticing how the relaxed positions for my body parts were different than I would have guessed.
Through most of it, I had this nagging feeling that I wasn't making the most of my relaxation time! Wow, that is the story of my life.
Eventually I got to the point where I was just floating neck relaxed and unsupported, maybe meditating or light sleeping or just doing nothing. That was great, but I think it was only for a few minutes and then my time was up.
The place is all co-ed and clothing optional. Before the float I was the only one there so it didn't matter. Then when I was done, my boyfriend was in there showering before his session. Shortly after he got into the tank I was trying to wash the salt out of my hair and a naked man walks out of the sauna, directly in front of me! I was only mildly uncomfortable about it as I knew it was a possibility. 2 more guys in towels came out of the steam room as i was getting dressed.
After the float, as I was leaving I stepped out into the sunny and cold afternoon and birds were singing and I felt total peace. It was great! I walked up the street to a gellato/coffee shop and studied until boyfriend called to tell me he was all done.
Throughout the rest of the day I was aware that my neck and back felt more relaxed than usual and I didn't have that constant desire to twist or stretch all the time.
Lessons & tips: Don't get the water in your eyes.
