How to get a better paying job
How I did it: I found a great job that pays well and uses my college degree! This sounds like a spam ad doesn't it?
Well first of all it took me six months because I didn't want to leave my job but I had been there almost 12 years and I needed a change!
I looked at the classified ads in the newspaper. I looked at websites for agencies that provide services in my field.
I was picky but patient. I didn't want to apply for the first job that I saw because I wanted good pay for the right position for me.
I went on a total of three interviews. I polished my resume a total of three times.
The first two interviews were great because they were good practice for the third one. Because the third interview landed me the job!
My advantages over the other applicants were:
1. I worked for the same agency before doing pretty much the same thing.
2. I was enthusiastic and optimistic at the interview. I listed my strengths without bragging.
3. I have the qualities that my boss was looking for in an employee and I listed those qualities at the interview. I made a great impression!
Lessons & tips: Be patient and optimistic! Relax at the interview. It's normal to be nervous but don't forget to breathe, smile, and say good things about yourself and what you have to offer to the company.
The cover letter isn't always easy! List your strengths! Write a little about where you have worked before - what did you do at your previous jobs? What did you learn from it?
How are you going to apply those job experiences to your next job?
Tell others that you are looking and they will keep an eye out for you. I know of three people who told me they would look at ads for me.
Resources: Resume building websites, agency websites. Look for agencies within your field. They list job postings. Even if you're not applying for a specific job, you can still e-mail your resume to let them know you're looking.
