How to serve on the board of a non-profit

"Joined the planning commission for my city, Bellevue, WA. Not quite non-profit in the 501c* tradition, but close enough."
How I did it: Looked in the city's website for civic participation opportunity, and found that they were recruiting for commissioners. I have always have been interested in urban design issues so this was a perfect fit for me to help the community in a way that I enjoy.
Lessons & tips: Look around. Keep eyes open. Be flexible on time. While it does not pertain to my business or career per se, the experience does help me personally in surprisingly indirect ways.
