How I did it: I joined a costume construction class at my University, and made a complete 18th century gown, including two corsets (one mock-up, one real).  First I took measurements for my model, created a dress form (in the form I wanted my corset to make) and then using a pattern from the period, I blew the pattern up (from a book), and created the corset!  Now I just need to make one for myself :)
