How I did it: Lucky enough to find a company that had a corporate headquarters in Southern CA.  worked a deal that brought me from the east coast to the west coast.  In that move, I made it a priority to find a rental unit near the water - worked hard with a real estate agent who did the leg work on narrowing down choices near the water.  Ended up with a beautiful view of the Pacific ocean  - I lived there for 18 mos, (near Laguna Beach) and then moved to Santa monica (Can't see the water from the apt. but the beach is only 1 mile).  

Be willing to downsize, pay more $$ for rent, and live in more densely populated areas.
