How to be more green
How I did it: Joined a food co-op. Started eating more local food. Bought a Prius. I am currently at 40 MPG and increasing this number constantly as the car is brand new. Am growing some of my own food. This consists of mostly pots with tomatoes, onions, herbs and basically whatever I can fit in a small suburban yard. I am going to do some canning and freezing this fall to preserve locally grown produce. I am also composting more of our yard waste and vegetable waste. We are lucky to have a city that makes recycling fairly easy and have been regularly recycling everything possible.
Lessons & tips: Utilize your local famer's market. Try to buy food that is in-season and/or grown locally. You can usually find produce, meat, eggs, milk and cheeses. Some areas have local farms that, for an upfront fee, will deliver bushels or half-bushels of food during the growing season. The growing season runs from Spring 'til Fall in most locales. Walk or ride a bike whenever possible. Recycle and reuse as much as you can.
Resources: The internet is a great resource. Reading "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" by Barbara Kingsolver encouraged me to eat local foods and try to grow more of my own.
