How to tutor reading to 4th Graders!
How I did it: In my new job, I met a woman who manages the crew rebuilding the San Francisco Bay Bridge. She suggested I get involved with Faith Networks when I shared my passion for compassion-- I love to give back to the community. She invited me to tutor 4th graders in reading once a week as part of the CalTrans team. I got my TB test, my background check, and signed up last fall. I now tutor two 4th grade girls and we have lots of fun!
Worth doing!!
Lessons & tips: Attend a tutor training class
Just do it! There aren't many people out there who are willing to take an hour a week to make reading a fun activity for young people.
Resources: The local library may have a literacy program, or ask at a local school, church, temple, or synagogue. If you don't want to work with kids, volunteer to read to the elderly in nursing homes. Lots of them don't get enough companionship!
