How to make sushi
How I did it: I already had one of those sushi kits (it came with a bamboo mat & bamboo paddle). I went out to the Asian Mart and bought some stuff like powdered wasabi (just add water), sushi soy sauce, nori sheets, sticky rice, avocados, carrots, cucumbers, and synthetic crab meat. I wanted to stay away from any real meats that I could get people sick from, since it was my first time making sushi. It takes like three hours to make it. It takes an hour to prepare sushi rice, and then you have to chop up the ingredients correctly (it is nice to have an assistant while doing so) and saute them in sake and rice vinegar and stuff. It's weird because you actually have to roll up the ingredients with the bamboo mat. The sushi came out very good, like restaurant quality.
Lessons & tips: - Green tea mochi with powdered sugar makes a great dessert after sushi. ;]
- Try to keep your back straight and work on a high counter, it gets very tiring to keep hunching your shoulders.
- Have a clean brush to paint the wasabi on the rice.
- To prevent the rice from sticking to your hands, have a bowl of diluted rice vinegar ready to dip your hands in.
- Make sure that you have sake and plenty of rice vinegar before making sushi.
- Follow directions closely!
