How to produce my own food
How I did it: The best thing about producing your own food is anyone can do it, no matter the amount of space one has to use. You can even do it on an apartment balcony if you wish. That is where I started.
The best way to start is with a pot and some lettuce seedlings, then move on to other fruits and veggies. If you have to space start a small no-dig veggie patch, then work your way up to bigger things.
Also buy old books that have the old fashioned recipes to make stuff from scratch(the thrift stores are the best for these sorts of books).
This really was one of the best things I could have ever done, no way am I going to go back to store bought frozen-for-6-to-12-months food again. Also in the long run it is cheaper.
Lessons & tips: Read, read, read. Read all the books you can get your hands on. From gardening to the old fashioned recipes for things like tomato sauce (which tastes much better when home made) and making your own butter out of cream. (Also tastes better than store bought stuff)
Start small and dont try to do everything at once, slowly work your way up.
Research and grow plants native to your area, as these are the most pest resistant and condition tolerent for your area.
Resources: One book that really helped me was "Backyard self sustainability by Jackie French.
Also an article by her on Self sufficiency on a balcony.
