How I did it: I believe it was in about 1994 when our office first got computers with mice. At the time I was working in Word Processing and was having some significant carpal tunnel pain in my right wrist from all the typing.
Before we got the new computers and while we were evaluating systems, I visited a friend in another law firm to look at what systems they had in place and how they were using them. I noticed my friend was using the mouse with her left hand. I asked if she was left handed and she said no. She used her left hand to mouse so she wouldn't have pain from mousing with her right hand.
I had heard that you can switch the mouse buttons so you can "left click" with your index finger of your left hand actually using the right button. But my friend did not advise that because other people may come up to her desk and want to use the mouse, and that's just confusing. It also means you can't walk up to another computer and immediately start using the mouse with your left hand - you would have to do setup first.
When we got our new computers they sent me to a Windows class where I used a mouse for the very first time. It made sense to me that since I write with my right hand it might help my carpal tunnel pain to distribute the use of my hands by learning to mouse with the left.
My right-handedness was dominant enough though that I tried mousing with the right hand first. I found:

Bee Sage obsessed with learning
I never considered using my left hand!
My dad’s a lefty and had to learn the opposite direction because all of the mice he had to use were curved for right hands. Did you have any problems with that?
Sounds like a good way to keep your wrist safe, too!
I might try this because my desk at work is set up backwards because of the shape of the room. If I can use my left hand, I’d be able to sit normally in my chair instead of leaning forward all day!
Many mice are straight so you don’t have to worry about which hand to use. But I have also used mice that were supposedly curved for more ergonomic use in the right hand, and it wasn’t difficult at all for me to grab it with the left hand. If you have one of those curved mice give it a try and if it bugs you too much just get a straight one. They are fairly inexpensive and you might even be able to get a friend to trade with you for a few days while you try it out.
The only mouse I cannot use with my left hand is the kind with the big ball you roll with your right thumb.
Hmm, I’m a little concerned about your setup Bee, having to lean forward like that. I have counseled many coworkers who have pain of one sort or another and ergonomics plays a huge role. You want to be relaxed and in a proper posture, definitely not leaning forward.
I have seen people develop all sorts of injuries from having their mouse too far away or at the wrong height, from necks to shoulders, etc. It’s worth looking for a way to fix that situation. And if mousing with the left hand might do the trick, it’s definitely worth a try. Good luck!

One thing a former clinician of mine told me was to get comfortable using surgical instruments in both hands.
You can overcome right handed dominance through repitition.

that you can teach yourself to switch hands.
But I woudn’t try it for the first time while doing a real surgery. :O
I do this too! I made the switch about 4 years ago due to cubital tunnel syndrome (similar to carpel tunnel) and it has helped immensely. One great multitasker I have found is that I can write something and mouse at the same time – bonus! :o)
My IT guy at work has a hard time with it, but the family has gotten used to it. Most of the time they just stay away from my computer though.
I like that click+write trick too! It can really be a timesaver.
I work in IT and my coworkers at the office are accustomed to putting the mouse on the left for me when I do presentations. I don’t switch the mouse buttons like some do, so they don’t have to do any setup for me.
If you mean when the IT guy sits down to your computer to do some task I can see how that would take some getting used to. I find a similar difficulty when I go to a PC where someone has one of those thumb ball mice.
Good for you for daring to be different and taking this proactive step for your wrist health.

but mostly with the left one. Didn’t have any pain, but as I am right handed I wanted to train my left hand a bit. I believe it’s good for the brain.<|8)
absolutely right about that! And good for you for mousing with the left. I bet there are people who envy you because they don’t think they can do that.
